Guanajuato, in central Mexico, is a historic silver-mining district that has also produced fine collector minerals — most famously rich purple amethyst and silver sulfides.
Epithermal silver veins
Guanajuato's wealth came from epithermal silver-gold veins worked since the 16th century. The same hydrothermal system that deposited the silver also lined vugs with quartz, including the deeply coloured amethyst the district is known for.
Signature minerals
Collectors prize Guanajuato's amethyst, native silver and acanthite, along with apophyllite and other vug minerals. Amethyst with a saturated purple colour is the locality's hallmark.
