關於此標本
乍看幾乎全黑，這根小巧的孔雀石柱在光線下才化開，顯出一疊緊密的綠黑色球體，泛著低調的絲質光澤。人們期待的那種綠色其實一直都在，只是藏著：右下方一處斷口開出一扇純翠綠的窗，窗內可見纖維根根直立，自它們所堆築的球心向外放射。
孔雀石是一種銅的碳酸鹽氫氧化物，Cu2CO3(OH)2，凡是含銅水溶液滲入碳酸鹽岩之處，它就以這種方式生長：一根纖維接著一根纖維，從無數各自獨立的起點向外推進。深色的外皮不過是同一批纖維風化後的表面。莫氏硬度 3.5–4，很容易刮傷，酸更會直接侵蝕它，因此請勿使用超音波清洗機，清潔時只用清水配軟毛刷即可。
標準的微型標本：3.0 × 1.5 × 0.8 cm，5 g，以黏土固定於透明壓克力底座上。照片拍攝的正是這件標本本身，翠綠窗口亦在其中。
