這件標本由一枚晶體撐起全局：一枚陡峭的桃粉色方解石偏三角面體，半透明到足以讓光線穿過晶面，自一楔黏土灰色母岩上斜傾而出。其後擠著一小排輪廓相同的犬牙狀小晶體，主晶內部則飄過一抹淡淡的鏽色暈染。
方解石（CaCO3）的晶習之多冠絕群礦，而偏三角面體——經典的犬牙狀——是收藏者一眼便能認出的那一種。湖北大冶礦區產出的正是這一路淺淡而暖調的樣式，顏色來自微量雜質，而非任何處理。莫氏硬度 3，三個方向完全解理，方解石需要一塊軟布與零碰撞；請讓任何酸性物質遠離它，即使弱酸也會蝕去這些晶面的光澤。
標本尺寸 3.8 × 2.5 × 3.6 cm，重 26 g，坐落於圖中可見的透明壓克力座上。此處每一張照片拍攝的都是這件標本，別無其他。
