在陰影中是瓶綠色，光線一找到進入的路徑便立刻轉為熾烈的祖母綠——這種轉變讓透視石有別於其他任何綠色礦物，而這件剛果標本把它鋪滿了一整片未曾中斷的晶殼。短而粗壯的柱狀晶體與銳利的菱面體端面擠滿了上方三分之二，到與圍岩交接處則細化為閃亮的細晶簇。下方與右側，赭色的褐鐵礦在裸露而洞穴狀的凹陷中透了出來，使綠色顯得更加硬朗。
透視石是一種銅的環狀矽酸鹽，化學式為 CuSiO3·H2O，它的顏色來自銅本身，而非微量雜質——這正是色調能貫穿整枚晶體的原因。莫氏硬度 5，且具完全的菱面體解理，比收藏家想像中更容易崩缺，因此請托住褐鐵礦部位拿取，並避免超音波清洗機與直接加熱。
