麥稈金色的方解石晶片在這塊湖南標本上彼此交疊，呈扁平而略帶扭曲的片狀，每一片與下一片以角度相接，使整個集合體像一朵綻放到一半而停格的花。晶片半透明，新鮮的邊緣帶玻璃光澤，向中心加厚處轉為琥珀色，少數縫隙間沉積著一層淡淡的鏽色薄膜。
收藏家稱此為花瓣狀晶習：方解石以寬闊扁平的菱面體生長，層層交疊堆砌，而非長成塊狀的單晶。方解石莫氏硬度 3，三個方向具完全解理，受撞時會乾淨地劈開，而不是崩出小缺口。請讓它遠離食醋、除垢劑與家用清潔劑——稀酸會直接把晶面上的光澤蝕去。
