這件螢石在眼裡沒有一處是立方的。它是一塊圓潤的麵包形，約莫一顆大雞蛋的尺寸，整個表面由如屋瓦般交疊鋪陳的薄晶板構成，因此光線在其上碎成一連串短促的平面閃爍，而不是一道乾淨的反射。頂部是麥稈金色，顏色在下方三分之一處加深為煙燻橄欖灰，那裡有深色的礦物斑點就藏在表皮之下。
螢石是 CaF2，結晶於等軸晶系，因此這樣的外形記錄的是生長停止之後發生的事：晚期流體蝕刻並部分再溶解了外部晶面，留下原始晶體的階梯狀殘跡，而非平整的立方晶面。江西螢石的蒐藏者正是為了這種質感而尋找這類標本，因為沒有兩件會以相同方式被侵蝕。莫氏硬度 4，具完全八面體解理——請勿把更硬的標本放在同一層架上。
