在一塊掌心大小、覆著砂糖狀晶簇的米色岩板上，茄紫色的螢石立方體像被留在棋盤上的棋子般散落著。左緣擠著一群密集的淡丁香色小立方體；四五顆深得多的晶體漂散在開闊的板面上，其中最大的一顆在肩角處幾近黑色。它們的晶面呈階梯狀並帶蝕刻，而非鏡面平整，把光打碎成細密的台地。
蝕刻發生在晶體之後：晚期的酸性流體啃咬立方體的晶面，接著一層奶油色的晶簇毯長過整塊岩板，並在數顆立方體周圍漫上來，把它們半埋其中。這段順序在此處清晰可讀，在較齊整的標本上鮮少如此，而這正是一塊帶蝕刻的貴州岩板比玻璃光亮者更耐讀的原因。螢石是 CaF2，莫氏硬度 4，沿八面體解理輕易分開。
