墨黑般的深紫色螢石自砂糖質的奶油色晶殼下透出，殼面裂成一道道破口，像積雪被一條條掀開。晶殼斷開之處，螢石在陰影裡讀來近乎全黑，一旦有光掠過稜線，便硬生生轉為葡萄紫；幾片褐黃色的碳酸鹽薄片留在凹陷處。這裡沒有任何一處經過拋光——每一個表面都是天然生成的模樣。
貴州螢石正走這一端的紫色，飽和到在標本後方打一盞燈，比在上方打燈更能成就它。那層淡色晶殼，是螢石形成之後才蔓延覆上的晚期一代晶體，也正是它賦予這件標本質感：無光而顆粒感十足，對比著螢石玻璃般的晶面。螢石是 CaF2，摩氏硬度 4，在四個方向上具完全解理——請托住結殼的母岩，並避開硬碰撞。
