關於此標本
白堊般的瓣狀突起在這件小巧石膏的表面層層交疊，每一瓣都布滿細密的同心皺紋，凹陷處撒著鏽橙色的氧化鐵。外形是一朵扁平的玫瑰花結，約莫核桃大小；多數石膏呈玻璃光澤，它卻啞光而不透明：整件標本上找不到一個晶面，只有一層層堆積起來的增生。
石膏的成分是 CaSO4·2H2O，硬度僅莫氏 2——指甲就能刮傷它，濕布更糟，因為石膏微溶於水，一經水洗便會失去光澤。這種爆米花狀晶習來自礦物質水薄膜的緩慢堆積，而非在開放空腔中自由生長，這正是它的表面由一層層圓殼而非平面構成的原因。
