對著光舉起時，這顆骷髏頭幾乎變得半透明——溫暖的乳白至蜜色玉髓讓光線深入顱骨數毫米才耗盡。拋光的程度足以在額頭與顴骨上拉出銳利的高光，牙齒刻成兩排整齊的行列，每一顆都以一道淺淺的垂直切痕方正地分開。沿著左側顳部，雕刻者遇上一處狹窄的灰色晶簇孔洞，便將它保留成敞開而未拋光的模樣。
那處孔洞才是有趣的地方。瑪瑙的形成是二氧化矽自空腔洞壁向內填充，而當供給在中心閉合之前便告耗盡，最後的空間就維持中空，晶簇於是在其中結晶。從這樣的結核中雕出一顆骷髏頭是一場賭博：在表面鑿穿之前，沒有人看得見那個空腔，而它落在哪裡，決定了整件作品。
