關於此標本
蜜色沿著這顆大冶方解石的上緣流動，往下便漸漸淡入煙灰。晶體本身是一顆完整的塊狀菱面體，透明到能看見指尖隔著它投下的影子；寬闊的上晶面上，細密的生長紋交錯成網。正面有一道邊緣顯得格外明亮通透——那是一條狹窄的天然斜面，橫貫晶體全寬，並非任何切磨加工的結果。
湖北的大冶礦區是鐵與銅的產地，當地的方解石常常就是這個樣子：溫暖的鐵染色調覆在透明晶體上，幾何形態銳利，表面則以條紋保存著自身的生長記錄。就化學而言它是 CaCO3，屬三方晶系，硬度莫氏 3。菱面體解理正好與那些明亮的邊緣平行，因此若碰撞的位置不對，掉下來的會是一整片，而不是一個小缺口。
