關於此標本
這裡全靠一顆晶體撐場：一顆淡玫瑰色的方解石，顏色如同貝殼內側，沒有母岩，也沒有伴生礦物來分散注意力。它的形態相當複雜——十來個晶面以平緩的角度交會，有些明亮如鏡，有些則被內部生長面遮成薄紗，在石體深處化為細密的平行紋理。
方解石（CaCO3）屬三方晶系，硬度僅莫氏 3，並具三個方向的完全菱面體解理——磕到稜邊會削下一片，而不是缺一個角。湖北多年來持續產出粉紅色方解石；這抹色調來自晶格中微量的錳，而錳也正是許多方解石會對紫外光產生反應的原因，只是強弱因晶體而異。在它後方放一條直邊，看到的雙重影像便洩漏了方解石著名的強雙折射。
3.8 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm、45 g，以灰白色黏土固定在此處所見的透明壓克力座上。所有影像都只拍攝了這顆晶體。
