從正面看，冠於這件瑤崗仙標本頂端的螢石幾近蛋形，而那個穹頂上的每一平方毫米，都由堆疊成階地的立方體稜角構成。上表面是淡丁香紫，玻璃般光亮到看似濕潤；更深處，青綠色的色帶與瘀傷般深沉的紫羅蘭色透了出來，在一道大階地之下最為清晰。它下方的部分則換了性格：一層奶油色、書頁般的片狀晶體襯墊——這個產地典型的雲母質母岩——其間楔著一枚無色的石英晶體。
階梯狀晶習源自骸晶生長。結晶速度較快時，螢石往立方體稜邊堆料的速度，快過它填滿晶面中央的速度，因此每一層都比下一層內縮，晶體最終成為一疊方框，而非平滑的方體。它值得用一盞會移動的燈來欣賞。莫氏硬度 4，具四個完全解理面，那些外露的階地正是最需要保護的部位。
