關於此標本
乳白色的石英晶尖擠滿這塊小板的上半部，每一支都覆著糖霜般的第二代微晶，把稜角磨圓，使整簇晶體呈啞光而非玻璃光澤。它們下方的岩石驟然轉為炭黑至近乎全黑，為淡色的晶尖提供了強烈的圖像式背景。
石英會以這樣的被覆記錄自身的歷史。第一代長成乾淨的晶柱；之後較冷的流體再在既有結構上鋪下一層細緻晶簇，模糊了銳利的晶面，卻沒有破壞底下的形態。內蒙古盛產這類長在深色含硫化物岩石上的兩期石英。莫氏硬度 7 的石英本身無需特別照料——唯一脆弱的是那層晶簇薄皮，一經刷洗就會失去光采。
標本尺寸為 6.5 × 6.0 × 4.0 cm，重 100 g，以手持方式拍攝以供比例參考，不含底座出售。照片中的石板與寄出的石板是同一塊。
