關於此標本
這件印度標本的基座是一層黃銅色的黃鐵礦殼，晶面已生出油膜般的暈彩，隨著持握的角度在金色、綠色與古銅色之間流轉。自那層晶床上長出無色的石英晶體：兩枚修長、發育良好的晶尖向上向後伸展，兩者之間是一個低矮的玻璃質圓丘，側翼還有一叢叢更細的針狀晶體呈扇形散開。
黃鐵礦（FeS2）上的這道彩虹不是任何人塗上去的。那是晶面上一層極薄的氧化膜，像肥皂泡一樣把白光分解開來。這層膜正是標本最脆弱的部分：擦拭、拋光或濕洗都會把它直接抹去。請保持乾燥，只用軟毛刷。莫氏硬度 7 的石英則毫無需索。
尺寸 6.9 × 4.9 × 3.4 cm，重 105 g，置於圖中的透明壓克力座上。全部照片都拍自這一件標本，而非同類示意品。
