一枚藍銅礦太陽花幾乎覆蓋這片薄板的整個表面：圓盤中心的群青深得近乎墨色，光線掠過之處則轉為矢車菊藍。表面是絨質而非玻璃質的——無數微小晶片豎立而生，宛如地毯的絨毛。兩三處淡色的黏土母岩自藍色中透出，為圓盤勾出海岸線般的邊界。
這類太陽花形成於藍銅礦在軟質黏土岩層之間結晶之處：向上生長已無空間可用，放射狀的晶片便橫向鋪展成扁平的圓盤。藍銅礦是一種銅的碳酸鹽，Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2，莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，而淡色母岩更為柔軟。Malbunka 太陽花切勿水洗，也切勿刷拭藍色部位；吹一口氣就是全部的清潔工序，並且應避免陽光直射。
薄板尺寸 2.8 × 2.8 cm、厚 1.3 cm，重僅 10 g，以白色黏著膠泥固定在透明壓克力座上。每一張照片拍攝的都是這枚太陽花本身，固定方式亦如圖所示。
