煙水晶(SiO₂)屬三方晶系,以透明至半透明的煙灰至褐色調著稱,此色澤源自天然輻射與微量鋁雜質。其莫氏硬度為 7,具玻璃光澤,兼具耐久性與迷人的光彩。石榴石晶體通常為鐵鋁榴石(Fe₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃),呈深紅棕色,具玻璃至樹脂光澤,結晶於等軸晶系。乳白色的白雲石菱面體(CaMg(CO₃)₂)則以其菱面體晶形與珍珠光澤,為整體美感增添一分柔和的對比。

本標本產自著名的礦物產地——美國田納西州的埃爾姆伍德礦(Elmwood Mine),該礦以出產優質的煙水晶與嵌於白雲石母岩中的石榴石晶簇聞名。晶形銳利明確的煙水晶晶頂立於白雲石母岩之上,加上散布其間的石榴石晶體,呈現形態與色彩交織的複雜視覺效果,陳列品質極佳。
