關於此標本
鉻綠色的晶體，沒有一顆比一粒砂糖大多少，結殼般覆滿這塊坦尚尼亞板狀標本的正面。每一顆都是帶玻璃光澤的小菱形十二面體，聚在一起把光反射成翠綠與雪白的碎點。靠近左上方，晶被逐漸變薄，深灰色的圍岩透了出來，讓綠色有了燃燒的背景。
鈣鋁榴石是石榴石族中的鈣鋁端員，化學式為 Ca3Al2(SiO4)3；如此濃烈的綠色來自微量的鉻與釩取代了鋁的位置。這類晶體生長於熱液改造不純石灰岩之處，在孔洞壁上播下成千上萬顆細小的個體，而非少數幾顆大晶。硬度 6.5 至 7.5 且無解理，使這片晶簇遠比它閃亮的外表更為堅韌。
