扁平的方解石晶板層層堆疊、彼此錯開，像從屋頂滑落的石板瓦，每一片都是淡橄欖綠的菱面體，邊緣轉為半透明。上表面橫貫著一層磚紅色的微晶結殼，局部濃密，他處則稀薄成鏽色薄塵，晶板之間的凹陷裡填著赭黃色斑塊與近乎全黑的鐵氧化物。這裡沒有任何切割或修整——階梯狀的塔形就是晶體本來的生長方式。
這類層疊方解石的成因，是每一片新的晶板都在前一片上略微偏心成核，於是每一顆新生的菱面體都懸出於前一顆之外。紅色的包覆則是後來的事：富含鐵質的溶液流經晶洞，在外露的晶面上沉澱，這也是為什麼受到遮蔽的底面依然潔淨青綠。方解石莫氏硬度 3，細緻的結殼指尖一抹即落：只能用乾燥的軟毛刷，切勿沾水。
