關於此標本
在一臂之遙外，這枚福建螢石看起來是黑的；舉到燈前，整團塊體轉為深紫。它由兩枚塊狀晶體彼此穿插生長而成，而且沒有一個晶面是平的——每一處表面都被蝕刻回一片細小階梯狀立方組成的鑲嵌。較上方那枚晶體的表皮之下藏著較淡的淺紫色分帶，乳白色的母岩殼則裹住基部與右側。
幻影是一次中斷的記錄：生長停頓，一層雜質薄膜沉降在晶面上，生長再度開始，先前晶體的輪廓便被封存在完成的晶體之內。蝕刻發生在更晚的時候，流體開始把它們建起來的東西一點點取回。螢石（CaF2）屬等軸晶系，莫氏硬度 4，具完全的八面體解理，因此這麼重的一件標本應該從底下托住，而不是捏著邊角拿。
晶體尺寸 9.7 × 8.1 × 6.1 cm，重 695 g，櫃級的體量，拿在手上實在有份量。照片為裸件手持拍攝，不附底座：您看到的就是待售的那枚晶體，而不是同一晶洞裡的替身。
