一叢石英晶錐幾乎被整個吞沒。硬錳礦以煤煙般、細密顆粒狀的黑色結殼覆生於柱面之上，順著每一個晶面與稜邊延伸，直到整叢晶體看去宛如一件炭雕。只有兩枚晶尖倖免：一枚在頂端，煙灰而富玻璃光澤；一枚在右下，清透如水、晶面銳利，是這片黑色中僅有的明亮缺口。
硬錳礦是舊時對堅硬葡萄狀錳氧化物的野外統稱，它在晶洞中出現得晚，沉澱在已然矗立的晶體之上。這正是這件標本清晰可讀之處：石英在先，錳在後，順序就寫在標本上。這層包覆莫氏硬度 5 至 6，相當堅硬，但顆粒狀的質地容易藏塵，水乾後會留下淡色斑點——請用乾刷。
它小巧而挺立，5.8 × 3.8 × 5.1 cm、75 g，是一件適合近距離端詳的小型標本。標本固定於一根透明壓克力圓柱上，將這叢黑色晶體托離層架，讓兩枚石英晶尖都能接住光線。這段描述與這些影像，都取自標本本身。
