關於此標本
清澈如水、銳利得能割出陰影，這件標本上的方解石長成兩片扁平的葉狀晶體，以淺淺的 V 形相接：一片近乎水平，收成長長的鑿刀狀尖端，另一片則在其後方昂起。兩者從頭到尾都透明，晶體末端完整無缺，內部可見兩個個體接合處的細直縫線。後方由一列乳褐色的白雲石晶簇為這一對晶體作襯。
方解石是碳酸鈣，莫氏硬度 3，在三個方向具完全解理——如此透明的晶體，比它的尺寸看起來更為脆弱，而晶尖是粗心搬動時最先失去的部分。白雲石母岩，CaMg(CO3)2，也僅僅略硬一點。請讓兩者遠離任何酸類，包括廚房裡的醋酸蒸氣。
