圓潤的瘤狀草黃色方解石團塊覆蓋了這片標本的大部分，在高處緣緣相接密實鋪開，並在中央讓出一道寬闊的溝道，露出裸露的奶色母岩，岩面上可見細緻的燈芯絨般紋理。每一團都散開為多面的晶尖，隨標本轉動而各自閃亮，黃色在晶體堆積最厚處加深為金色。
大冶位於矽卡岩地帶，花崗岩侵入石灰岩，留下的碳酸鹽晶洞長出的方解石正是這種溫暖的色調。覆蓋率是這樣一片標本能否成立的關鍵：晶體布滿大部分陳列面，轉向光線時沒有一處死角。代價則是脆弱——每一顆晶頭都突出在外，方解石軟到一枚銅幣就能留痕，而與更硬的標本共處一個抽屜，會把這些晶尖磨平。
