關於此標本
一顆乳白色方解石昂首立在低矮的黃褐色母岩結殼上，整件標本小到握起拳頭就能藏住。晶體呈半透明而非全透，晶面帶細密條紋，在光下微微泛出蠟質感，主晶尖後方還升起第二顆較小的晶尖。母岩露出之處，是一層粒狀的橄欖褐色結殼，上面點綴著無色的微晶。
方解石的化學式為 CaCO3，這樣一件標本正好示範了收藏者最常遇到的兩項特性：硬度僅 3，用銅幣就能刻出痕跡；以及三個方向的完全菱面體解理。這個礦種還具有強烈的雙折射，所以把一片清透的碎晶放在印刷線條上，線條會變成兩條。請保持乾燥，並遠離食醋或任何家用酸液——數秒之內就會蝕損表面。
