這塊板狀標本上多數的方解石晶體，上部晶面都覆著一層黃銅色的黃鐵礦，下方則保持透明玻璃質，因此整個表面看來像是嵌在無色石體中的卡其金色盾牌鑲嵌畫。晶體呈塊狀、頂面平坦，以淺角度三三相接——也就是收藏家因這種三向終端而稱之為「賓士」的晶體習性。鬆散的金色黃鐵礦細粒填滿了縫隙，下緣還有一道鏽紅色的鐵質脈紋。
湖北大冶是古老的鐵銅矽卡岩產區，這種組合正是它的標誌：方解石先行結晶，待流體性質改變之後，黃鐵礦才沉積在裸露的上部晶面。方解石的化學式為 CaCO3，莫氏硬度 3，具完全的菱面體解理。請讓它遠離醋、酸性清潔劑以及任何比指甲更硬的東西；黃鐵礦的表層也不喜歡潮濕的存放環境。
