關於此標本
炭黑之上的緋紅碎紙屑。數百枚釩鉛礦晶體——六方板狀與短柱狀，多數僅數毫米大——散落在深色的啞光母岩上，光線同時做著兩件事：薄薄的晶稜如背光玻璃般泛出橙紅，平坦的底面卻在燈下閃現白光。顏色最濃處沿著右側邊緣分布，晶體在此擠成一片連續的晶殼。
釩鉛礦的化學式為 Pb5(VO4)3Cl，屬於氧化帶礦物：它形成於乾旱條件下、下滲水改造原生鉛礦之處，這正是摩洛哥出產如此多頂級標本的原因。釩帶來顏色，鉛則帶來上手時出乎意料的分量。莫氏硬度僅 3 且性脆，只宜用軟毛刷清理，絕不可用任何帶研磨性的東西——晶稜總是遠比母岩更早崩損。
這塊薄板尺寸為 6.9 × 1.5 × 5.3 cm，重 75 g，薄得可以平放在抽屜裡，也可以立靠在陳列櫃中。拍攝時未使用任何底座，照片如實呈現這件標本的原貌。
