Über diese Stufe
Jede Fläche dieses Keils ist eine Treppe. Über die Vorderseite springen die Würfelkanten in parallelen Terrassen zurück, jede Stufe nur wenige Millimeter tief, sodass die Oberfläche eher wie Architektur wirkt als wie ein einzelner Kristall. Die Farbe ist ein weiches Fliederweiß, näher an Milchglas als an einem kräftigen Ton, und die staubig weißen Partien entlang der oberen Kanten geben der Stufe jene zuckrige Textur, der sie ihren Namen verdankt.
Solches Stufenwachstum entsteht, wenn eine Würfelfläche an ihren Rändern schneller wächst als in der Mitte: Lage schichtet sich auf Lage, bevor eine von ihnen sich schließen kann – derselbe Mechanismus, der bei Halit die Hopper-Kristalle hervorbringt. Fluorit hat Mohshärte 4 und vollkommene oktaedrische Spaltbarkeit; bei einem terrassierten Stück sind die Stufenkanten die exponierten Stellen, stützen Sie es beim Bewegen daher von unten.
