Über diese Stufe
Der Schnitzer hat den besten Teil des Gesteins unangetastet gelassen. Der Rücken des Elefanten öffnet sich in eine unberührte Tasche, in der Hunderte dunkel granatroter Kristalle auf einem Bett grauer Druse sitzen und wie nasser Kies aufblitzen; der Rest des Tieres – schraffiertes Ohr, eingerollter Rüssel, schwere Beine – ist aus dem grauen Wirtsgestein gearbeitet, mit rostfarbenen Adern über der Flanke und einem dunklen polierten Stein als Auge.
Granat kristallisiert kubisch, besitzt keine Spaltbarkeit und liegt bei Mohs 6,5–7,5; deshalb behalten die Kristalle in einem geschützten Hohlraum wie diesem so scharfe Kanten und so blanke Flächen. Eine Figur um einen offenen Hohlraum herum aufzubauen, ist die schwierigere Aufgabe, als eine massive Figur zu formen: Die Tasche bestimmt, wohin das Tier gehen darf, und hier wurde sie zur Sänfte auf dem Rücken des Elefanten.
Das Stück misst 11,4 x 8,6 x 6,9 cm und wiegt 860 g, ein beidhändiges Objekt mit flachem Stand, das keinen Ständer braucht. Die Fotos zeigen allein diese Schnitzarbeit, kein Musterexemplar.
