Weinrote Vanadinit-Kristalle überkrusten fast jede Fläche dieses marokkanischen Stücks, Hunderte gedrungener sechseckiger Tönnchen, Schulter an Schulter gepackt. Trifft Licht auf eine Basisfläche, kippt die Farbe von tiefem Granatbraun in helles Silber. Über die Krone spannt sich ein Fächer schwarzer, blättriger Kristalle, und in den Mulden darunter liegen Flecken aprikosengelben Ockers und kreideweißer Kruste, das Ganze auf einem hellbraunen Muttergestein.
Vanadinit ist ein Blei-Chlorovanadat, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, gewachsen in den oxidierten oberen Bereichen von Bleilagerstätten, wo absteigendes Grundwasser das ältere Erz umwandelt. Es kristallisiert im hexagonalen System mit diamantenem bis harzigem Glanz, und bei Mohshärte 3 bis 4 nimmt es leicht Druckstellen – heben Sie das Stück an der Matrix an und lassen Sie in die Nähe der Kristallflächen nur einen weichen Pinsel, niemals ein Tuch.
Das Exemplar misst 7,6 × 5,3 × 4,1 cm und wiegt 125 g. Sie kaufen genau das Stück vor der Linse; es steht auf seiner eigenen hellbraunen Matrix und braucht keine Halterung.
