Über diese Stufe
Weiß ist auf diesem kleinen Stück aus Dexing die beherrschende Farbe. Eine gewölbte Kruste winziger farbloser Quarzkristalle bedeckt die gesamte Oberseite, so dicht gepackt, dass sie aus einer Armlänge Entfernung wie verschütteter Zucker wirkt. Etwas rechts der Mitte sitzt darin der Sphalerit: ein dunkelgrauer Knoten metallischer Kristalle, nicht größer als eine Linse, und darauf drei oder vier messinggoldene Kristalle, die die einzige warme Farbe des ganzen Stücks liefern.
Sphalerit ist Zinksulfid, ZnS, und je dunkler er ausfällt, desto mehr Eisen sitzt in der Struktur – das fast schwarze, halbmetallische Material hier steht am eisenreichen Ende dieser Reihe, nicht bei der honigbraunen Edelvarietät. Er spaltet vollkommen nach sechs Richtungen bei Mohshärte 3,5 bis 4, weshalb gute Kristalle so häufig mit einer angestoßenen Kante ankommen. Dexing in Jiangxi ist eines der großen Kupferreviere Chinas, und seine Sulfide kommen auf genau solchen hellen Kieselsäurekrusten heraus.
