Shangbao Mine, Hunan, feather calcite with pyrite at 31 g; a miniature for the fluorescent-mineral collector.
Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.
Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 4.7 × 3.8 × 3.5 cm (1.85 × 1.50 × 1.38 in) and 31 g (1.1 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
