Láminas de calcita de color dorado pajizo se superponen a lo largo de esta placa de Hunan en hojas aplanadas y ligeramente alabeadas, y cada una se encuentra con la siguiente en ángulo, de modo que el agregado entero se abre como una flor sorprendida a medio desplegar. Las láminas son translúcidas y vítreas en sus bordes frescos, y se vuelven ámbar donde engrosan hacia el centro, con una ligera película de tono herrumbre asentada en algunos de los intersticios.
Los coleccionistas llaman a esto el hábito en pétalos de flor: calcita crecida como romboedros anchos y aplanados que se apilan en niveles superpuestos en lugar de construir cristales individuales macizos. La calcita tiene dureza 3 en la escala de Mohs y exfoliación perfecta en tres direcciones, así que un golpe produce una separación limpia antes que una simple mella. Manténgala alejada del vinagre, de los productos antical y de los limpiadores domésticos: el ácido diluido borra el brillo de esas caras.
