Sobre este espécimen
Una placa entera pavimentada de calcita gris ahumado, y casi todos los cristales que la cubren llevan una costra de hematita negra que brilla como carbón molido. Entre las zonas oscuras, ese recubrimiento se adelgaza hasta el rojo ladrillo y el salmón, mientras que la calcita del fondo pasa de casi incolora a gris tormenta según el espesor del crecimiento que la cubre. Con 14 cm de ancho, la placa llena la mano.
Ambos colores corresponden al mismo mineral. La hematita, Fe2O3, cristaliza en láminas negras metálicas, pero, pulverizada, recubre en forma de ocre rojo; por eso toda hematita deja una raya de color rojo pardo por muy negra que parezca. La calcita que la aloja tiene dureza 3 en la escala de Mohs y exfolia en tres direcciones, así que sostenga la placa por debajo en lugar de sujetarla por las puntas de los cristales.
Mide 14,0 × 11,4 × 5,1 cm y pesa 785 g; se presenta suelta, sin base. Las fotografías muestran en todo momento esta placa exacta.
