Sobre este espécimen
Cinco montículos verde botella oscuro se apiñan unos contra otros en esta malaquita del Congo, con las pieles picadas y mates en lugar de vítreas. En el borde derecho, uno de los botrioides está abierto, y la fractura se enciende en un esmeralda fibroso más brillante: los haces radiales de cristales que dan a la malaquita pulida sus ojos bandeados, aquí tal como crecieron.
La malaquita, Cu2CO3(OH)2, se forma en la capa oxidada por encima de los cuerpos de mineral de cobre, depositando capa sobre capa alrededor de un núcleo hasta que la superficie parece un racimo de uvas. Es blanda, entre 3,5 y 4 en la escala de Mohs, y reacciona con los ácidos, así que manténgala seca, quítele el polvo con un pincel suave y no la acerque nunca a un baño de ultrasonidos.
El ejemplar mide 4,6 × 2,3 × 2,5 cm y pesa 31 g, asentado sobre un bloque de acrílico transparente con masilla de montaje verde. La pieza de las fotografías es la que llegará a sus manos.
