Las puntas de cuarzo blanco lechoso se apiñan en la mitad superior de esta pequeña placa, cada una escarchada por una segunda generación azucarada de microcristales que redondea las aristas y vuelve mate, y no vítreo, todo el grupo. Debajo, la roca se oscurece bruscamente hasta el gris carbón y un negro casi absoluto, lo que da a las terminaciones pálidas un respaldo gráfico contundente.
El cuarzo registra su historia en recubrimientos como este. Una primera generación crece como prismas limpios; después, un fluido más frío deposita una fina drusa sobre todo lo que ya está en pie, y difumina las caras nítidas sin destruir las formas subyacentes. Mongolia Interior produce en abundancia este cuarzo de dos etapas sobre roca oscura portadora de sulfuros. Con dureza 7 en la escala de Mohs, el mineral en sí no requiere cuidados especiales: la única parte vulnerable es esa frágil piel de drusa, que pierde brillo si se frota.
El ejemplar mide 6,5 × 6,0 × 4,0 cm y pesa 100 g; se fotografió en la mano para dar escala y se vende sin soporte. La placa fotografiada y la placa enviada son una y la misma.
