Los cristales de calcopirita latonada se posan como monedas dispersas sobre una drusa de cuarzo blanco y, allí donde sus superficies han adquirido pátina, lanzan azules, verdes y violetas que cambian al mover el ejemplar. El cuarzo de debajo es una masa de pequeñas puntas incoloras, algunas reunidas en rosetas apretadas, y unas pocas manchas gris negruzcas de la roca subyacente asoman donde la cobertura se adelgaza.
La calcopirita (CuFeS2) es la principal mena de cobre del mundo, y la iridiscencia que se ve aquí es una auténtica película fina de óxido crecida sobre las caras de los cristales, no un recubrimiento aplicado: frotarla se limitaría a llevarse el color. La combinación con cuarzo blanco y limpio es una estampa habitual de Jiangxi, y el metal se lee mucho más cálido por el fondo frío sobre el que se asienta.
