Sobre este espécimen
Placas de calcita apiladas ascienden en cono desde una base ancha hasta un ápice afilado, con toda la torre bañada en un suave naranja salmón. Cada nivel sobresale por encima del anterior, y entre ellos la roca encajante gris oscura asoma allí donde la calcita adelgaza hasta volverse translúcida. El cristal más alto se alza destacado y completamente terminado, rematando la pila como un pináculo.
El color está dentro del cristal, no pintado sobre su superficie: al mirar a través de las placas más finas, el tinte anaranjado las atraviesa por completo. Daye, en Hubei, es tierra de skarn, y la calcita llega tarde en esa secuencia, rellenando el espacio abierto una vez que los minerales de mena han terminado de crecer. Dureza 3 en la escala de Mohs y tres direcciones de exfoliación imponen una sola regla: lleve la torre por su base, nunca por la punta.
6,6 × 5,6 × 5,1 cm y 165 g, con una base lo bastante ancha para sostenerse sin ayuda. Estas imágenes se hicieron a partir de esta pieza concreta; el escalonado y las inclusiones grises le pertenecen solo a ella.
