Sobre este espécimen
Una fina hoja de casiterita yace en diagonal sobre la cara del mayor cristal de cuarzo de este cúmulo de Yaogangxian, negra contra un fondo transparente como el agua, con una segunda hoja, más maciza, encajada en la grieta que hay detrás. Las puntas de cuarzo son incoloras y vítreas, varias de ellas terminadas y erguidas hombro con hombro, y un único cristal de pirita broncínea se asienta abajo, en el borde izquierdo.
La casiterita (SnO2) es la principal mena de estaño, y hojas como estas —casi negras, adamantinas, sorprendentemente pesadas para su tamaño— son su forma de presentarse en las vetas de cuarzo del sur de Hunan. Aquí el cuarzo creció rodeándolas y sobrepasándolas, hasta sellar una hoja plana contra una cara del prisma. El cuarzo tiene dureza 7 en la escala de Mohs y la casiterita de 6 a 7, así que la pieza soporta bien la manipulación; la pequeña pirita es lo más blando que hay en ella y lo primero que se apagará si se frota.
Una pieza compacta, de 5,6 × 5,1 × 5,1 cm y 90 g, que luce bien bajo una lámpara desde casi cualquier ángulo. Se fotografió en la mano, y el ejemplar de esas fotografías es el que se vende.
