About this specimen

Inner Mongolia, quartz at 4.6 cm; a miniature. A stout black prism with striations running its length lies across the piece, with white quartz cutting over it in narrow bands and pale crystals crusting the base.

Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.

Inner Mongolia's Huanggang and Chifeng districts produce fluorite, calcite, garnet and rhodochrosite in a lustre and clarity that set the modern standard for Chinese carbonates.

The piece is miniature in size, 4.6 × 2.4 × 1.7 cm (1.81 × 0.94 × 0.67 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
