Sobre este espécimen
Ámbar allí donde sus aristas superiores atrapan la luz y pardo oliva en la mitad inferior, un único octaedro de scheelita se yergue con la punta hacia abajo contra un pequeño ramillete de cuarzo incoloro. El brillo es graso más que vítreo, y las caras presentan una textura corroída y picada que dispersa el reflejo en lugar de devolverlo entero. El cuarzo del fondo es blanco y discreto: telón de fondo antes que competidor.
La scheelita es tungstato de calcio, CaWO4, y cristaliza en el sistema tetragonal: la forma que se lee como un octaedro es en realidad una doble pirámide, y esa casi simetría es lo que satisface en la mano. Xuebaoding, sobre Pingwu, en Sichuan, es la localidad china clásica de la especie, y sus cristales se mueven en este rango que va del ámbar al pardo. Espere que pese más de lo que su tamaño sugiere; la culpa es del wolframio. Dureza 4,5 a 5 en la escala de Mohs, así que se raya con facilidad, y bajo luz ultravioleta de onda corta suele brillar con un azul blanquecino.
Mide 4,6 × 3,0 × 3,6 cm y pesa 65 g sobre su cubo de acrílico transparente. El octaedro fotografiado es el que queda reservado con esta ficha.
