La patina ha trasformato questa piccola stibina dell’Hunan in qualcosa di più simile a una penna di fagiano che a un solfuro: indaco profondo, viola e bronzo scorrono sulle facce striate della lama man mano che il pezzo viene ruotato. Una crosta verde oliva pallido di microcristalli aderisce al terzo superiore e lungo un fianco, ammorbidendo il metallo con un bordo muschioso e opaco, e una stretta cavità si apre fra le lame verso l’alto.
La stibina, Sb2S3, cresce in questi prismi profondamente scanalati perché la sua struttura è costruita su catene di antimonio e zolfo parallele all’asse lungo: le scanalature sono quelle catene rese visibili. È inoltre fra le cose più tenere che un collezionista si troverà mai in vetrina, Mohs 2, tanto tenera che un’unghia la segna. La tenga lontana dalla luce intensa, la sollevi dalla base e non la lavi mai: la pellicola iridescente è uno strato superficiale e strofinarla la porta via all’istante.
