この標本について
一つの縦長の塊に、性格の異なる二種類の銅の炭酸塩が同居しています。ビロードのような緑の孔雀石は丸みを帯びたブドウ状の隆起をつくり、右側には群青色の藍銅鉱が砂糖粒のように細かい花状の集合となって盛り上がります。その色の濃さは、まるで裏から照らされているかのようです。緑は頂部で小さな尖塔となって立ち上がり、青は潮の跡のようにそれを追い、下の棚状の面でふたたび溜まります。そこには灰褐色の母岩がわずかに顔を出しています。
藍銅鉱 Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 と孔雀石 Cu2CO3(OH)2 の違いは、炭酸基一つと水分子一つほどしかなく、湿った空気の中では藍銅鉱がゆっくりと孔雀石に置き換わっていきます。この標本はその変化の途中を捉えたもので、二色の対比はそこから生まれています。どちらもモース硬度3.5〜4ほどと軟らかく、酸や水洗いを嫌います。手入れは乾いた布での埃払いだけにしてください。
塊の寸法は7.7 × 4.4 × 5.2 cm、重さ147 g。底面が平らなので、台座なしでそのまま自立します。写真はこの標本だけを撮影したものです。
