この標本について
蜂蜜色の結晶が二つ、互いに入り込むように育っています。小さいほうが大きいほうの肩に乗る格好です。どちらも半透明からほぼ透明で、広い面には細かい平行の条線が刻まれ、表面を淡いシャンパン色と暖かな琥珀色の縞に分けています。その下にはオリーブ色を帯びた晶洞状の細かい結晶が薄い棚をつくり、さらに下は紫がかった皮殻。二つの結晶が育った晶洞の、最後の名残です。
方解石（CaCO3）はほとんどどの鉱物種より多くの結晶形をとりますが、福建省の晶洞では、コレクターが期待する鋭い偏三角面体の尖りではなく、こうした幅広く鈍い、条線の強い面になることが多いようです。モース硬度3、三方向に完全な菱面体劈開。露出した稜をぶつけると平らな面がきれいに剥がれ落ちることがあるので、持ち上げるときは母岩を掴んでください。
4.1 × 3.8 × 2.5 cm、35 gとコンパクトです。少し前に傾け、斜めから光を当てると条線がいちばんよく見えます。これらの写真は手に持って撮影したもので、写っているものがそのまま届きます。
