この標本について
麦わら色を帯びた金色の方解石が、平たくわずかに反った板となってこの湖南省産のプレートに折り重なっています。隣どうしが角度をつけて接するため、集合全体が咲きかけの花のように開いて見えます。板は半透明で、縁は傷みのないガラス質の輝きを保ち、中心へ向かって厚みを増すにつれ琥珀色へ温まります。板と板の隙間のいくつかには、薄い錆色の被膜が入り込んでいます。
コレクターはこれを花弁状の晶癖と呼びます。方解石が塊状の単結晶を築かず、幅広く平たい菱面体として育ち、互いに重なりながら段を成したものです。方解石はモース硬度3、三方向に完全な劈開をもつため、ぶつけると欠けるのではなくすっぱりと割れます。食酢、水垢取り、家庭用洗剤の類には近づけないでください。薄めた酸でも、この面の輝きはたちまち削がれてしまいます。
