Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica at 10.8 cm and 364 g; a cabinet piece. A tall block of pale mica books with a glassy, pale aquamarine crystal nestled near the top, the mica fanning in every direction.
Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.
Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
The piece is cabinet in size, 6.9 × 5.1 × 10.8 cm (2.72 × 2.01 × 4.25 in) and 364 g (12.8 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
