この標本について
川で磨かれた玉のように丸く、古いガラス瓶を思わせる色をしたこの葡萄石は、結晶群ではなくノジュールです。ほぼ球形の締まった塊で、肌は艶消しでかすかにざらつき、薄い皮殻がまだ残るところは淡いクリーム色や淡褐色にまだらになっています。肩のあたりには浅い筋が一本走り、縫い目のように上部を分けています。
葡萄石は独立した結晶ではなく放射状の繊維として成長することが多く、その繊維が中心から外へ詰まってゆくことで、コレクターにおなじみの丸いぶどう状の塊ができあがります。この種のノジュールは切り開けば、内部の繊維が細い針の扇として現れます。ここでは手つかずのままですから、成長の様子は、なめらかで少し凹凸のある外側から読み取るほかありません。モース硬度6〜6.5と、やわらかな緑の色合いから受ける印象より丈夫な鉱物です。
ノジュールはどの方向にも3.6 cm、重さは70 gです。写真に写る透明アクリルの展示ブロックに、白いパテを少し置いて据えた状態で届きます。写真の標本が、そのままお送りするものです。
