この標本について
この小さな徳興産標本は、ほとんどが白で占められています。ごく小さな無色の水晶からなるドーム状の皮殻が上面全体を覆い、腕を伸ばした距離から見ると、こぼれた砂糖のようです。その皮殻の中央よりわずかに右に、閃亜鉛鉱が座を占めます。レンズ豆ほどの大きさもない、濃い灰色の金属質な結晶の塊で、その上には真鍮色に光る金色の結晶が三、四粒、この標本で唯一の温かな色を添えています。
閃亜鉛鉱は硫化亜鉛、ZnSで、色が濃くなるほど構造に鉄が多く入っています。ここに見えるほぼ黒く亜金属光沢の物質はその幅の中でも鉄に富む端であって、蜜褐色の宝石質の変種ではありません。モース硬度3.5から4で六方向に完全な劈開があり、良い結晶がしばしば縁を痛めた状態で届くのはそのためです。江西省の徳興は中国でも大きな銅鉱床地帯の一つで、そこから産する硫化鉱物は、まさにこうした淡い珪酸の皮殻に載って出てきます。
