대부분 3~4 mm를 넘지 않는 연어빛 분홍 마름모 결정이 얇은 흰색 각질이 군데군데 덮인 짙은 회색 모암 위에 흩뿌려져 있습니다. 이렇게 흩어져 있어 표본이 오히려 잘 읽힙니다. 거의 검정에 가까운 바탕 위의 따뜻한 분홍, 그리고 루페 아래에서 기울어진 능면체 결정면을 드러낼 만큼 또렷한 개별 결정입니다.
능망간석은 탄산망간 MnCO3으로 삼방정계에 속하며, 색은 망간 함량을 따라갑니다. 여기 보이는 부드러운 연어빛 색조는 다른 산지의 짙은 라즈베리색과 달리 중국 산출품의 특징입니다. 관리가 까다로운 광물이기도 합니다. 모스 경도 3.5~4, 세 방향으로 완벽한 쪼개짐, 그리고 산이나 초음파 세척기에는 전혀 견디지 못합니다. 건조하게 보관하고 아래에서 받쳐 주십시오.
