이 표본에 대하여
엄지손톱보다 길지 않은, 희끄무레하고 부슬부슬한 쐐기 모양 모암의 한쪽 끝에 강렬한 마젠타빛 꽃이 피어 있습니다. 보라색이 감도는 색조의 능망간석이며, 오른쪽 가장자리에서는 더 작은 연보라색 끝단 두 개가 돋아 나옵니다. 결정면은 유리질이 아니라 무광의 설탕 같은 질감이어서 색이 반사광이 아닌 안료처럼 읽히고, 회색 배경 앞에 두면 표본 크기에 비해 놀라울 만큼 강렬합니다.
능망간석은 탄산망간(MnCO3)으로, 방해석에서 칼슘이 차지하는 구조적 자리에 망간이 들어앉은 광물입니다. 결정격자가 망간을 많이 받아들일수록 분홍빛은 더 뜨겁게 짙어집니다. 모스 경도 3.5~4로 쉽게 긁히고, 일반 가정용 세정제에 들어 있는 식초를 포함한 산과 닿으면 표면이 부식됩니다. 마른 상태로 먼지만 털어 내시고 그 이상은 하지 마십시오.
3.6 × 1.3 × 2.3 cm, 11 g으로 손을 오므리면 감쪽같이 숨을 만큼 작으며, 사진에 보이는 투명 아크릴 큐브에 접착 점토로 이미 고정된 상태로 도착합니다. 여기 촬영된 것이 바로 받으실 표본입니다.
