Tientallen fijne naaldwaaiers spreiden zich omhoog vanuit een roestbruine ruggengraat, elk ontvouwd als een schoof tarwe: wit bij de tippen, overgaand in abrikoos waar de kristallen dikker worden. De bruine kern eronder is bladerig en ijzerkleurig aangeslagen, en juist die maakt dat de bleke waaiers helderder lijken dan ze zijn – een klein object dat zich onder een lamp gedraagt als een veel groter stuk.
Gips is gehydrateerd calciumsulfaat, CaSO4·2H2O, en met hardheid 2 (Mohs) laat het zich met een vingernagel krassen; naaldvormige habitussen zijn de kwetsbaarste gedaante die het aanneemt. Naaldige waaiers groeien in open holtes waar de kristallisatie traag en onbelemmerd verloopt, zodat elke naald zijn richting van kiemvorming tot punt vasthoudt. Stof het af met een zachte blaasbalg in plaats van een kwast, en was het nooit – gips lost licht op in water.
Compact met 3,0 × 2,3 × 2,3 cm en amper 10 g, rust de waaier op de kleine doorzichtige acrylkubus die op de foto's te zien is. Niets hiervan is een stockbeeld: dit is de groep die u ontvangt.
